  • This course provides an introduction to Koine Greek, the original language of the New Testament. It is designed for students with no prior knowledge of the language. The course focuses on building foundational knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and syntax to enable students to read and understand the Greek New Testament.

GROWTH

  • The study and the application of various biblical disciplines that will assure the spiritual growth of the individual

  • The study of being a mature Christian single and of learning how to minister to our spouse’s love needs, and some practical pointers about parenting

  • A foundational course designed to help the student develop balanced, sensible, and logical methods to understand and properly interpret scripture

  • Basic, non-clinical counseling skills and insights relevant to the people-helping tasks of ministry

  • This course offers supervised training and practical experience in sharing the Gospel, focusing on intentionally engaging in personal evangelistic witnessing. Students will learn effective methods and tools for sharing the Gospel and will explore the biblical, theological, historical, and practical aspects of evangelism within the local church to help fulfill the Great Commission.

HISTORY/EVIDENCES

  • A study of historical and scientific proof of biblical people, places, and events

  • A survey of church history from the pre-Christian background through the Reformation and Restoration Movements and up to the present

MISSIONS

  • The study of missions as seen throughout the scriptures

MEN’S MINISTRY

  • This course is designed to help the student improve his/her study and research skills and to communicate more effectively, especially in written form. Students are introduced to the proper writing form for research papers at Sunset and are given a brief review of English grammar. An additional area of study includes an overview of the Koine Greek language.

  • An introduction to the principles and practices of preaching, including a survey of the minister and his personal life. Emphasis is given to the study of homiletics, the role of the preacher, and the preparation and delivery of Biblical sermons.

  • Designed to build confidence in public speaking. Students give short speeches on various subjects. Effective public reading of scripture is also addressed.

  • Assignments given in this class relate to elements of sermon preparation and delivery covered in Introduction to Homiletics (taken in the same term).

  • Emphasis is placed on preaching from a short text and preaching a series of sermons from one of the Epistles.

  • Students are assigned various biblical topics and are expected to prepare and deliver well-organized sermons.

  • Focuses on the dynamics of teaching a Sunday morning adult Bible class and how it differs from preaching a sermon

  • Focuses on teaching in a variety of settings outside the Sunday Bible class

  • Narrative preaching is emphasized; preaching from the wisdom literature and the prophets is covered, as is making connections between Old Testament passages and New Testament fulfillments.

  • Development and presentation of sermons for weddings and funerals; also instruction in ministering effectively at such times.

  • The survival of the church depends on strong spiritual leadership. In this course we will study the need for leadership in the Church, characteristics of leadership, problems confronting church leaders, and leadership from different perspectives.

  • Church Growth is a study of the types of growth found in healthy, dynamic and growing families of God’s people. This course will continue the student’s preparation for the work of ministry, including discussions of the character, content, challenge, and opportunities for both the minister and the local church.

  • An advanced course in the study and preparation of sermons, including a deeper study of the various types of sermons and the diverse Biblical literature.  The course is designed to equip the student to preach more effectively and creatively.  Major emphases include enhancing communication skills and increasing organizational strategies.

  • This course examines the work of a minister in a local church setting in the United States. Major emphases include the minister’s work, his interpersonal relationships, his response to ministry stress, and his personal life.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY

  • Allows the student to learn basic cooking skills, but more importantly, gives insight into why God expects this expression of fellowship and discusses the beautiful results of hospitality toward others.

  • A resource-based class with various teachers. The purpose of this class is to look at areas of ministry that most ministers’ wives, female interns, and/or teammates of a mission team experience.

  • Designed to cover healthy and biblical parenting not only for the student but also for the people she will be encountering throughout her ministry.

  • An introduction to becoming a healthier woman of God mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  • Continued studies from Effective Women’s Ministry 1 with several out-of-class, hands-on assignments. Attention is also given to what healthy boundaries should look like in the students’ lives as well as in the lives of those they minister to.

  • Along with planning and presenting senior lessons, the women in this class consider how to build an effective women’s ministry. The resources gained in this class are vital in future ministry involvement whether stateside or on the mission field.

  • Basic introduction to public speaking

  • Building skills to give a short biographical lesson

  • Learning to prepare and facilitate a small group class/study

  • Building skills to give a topical lesson

  • Learning how to study the Bible through exegetical methods

  • Students prepare and present a lesson based on what they learned in Public Speaking 5 regarding how to study exegetically.

  • Gives the student an opportunity to participate in a simple, impromptu presentation

  • Each student prepares and presents her idea for a Ladies’ Day/Retreat that can be used in her future ministry.

DOCTRINAL

  • A study of Old Testament worship based on the Law of Moses and the concepts of sacrifice and atonement found in the book of Leviticus

  • A theological, doctrinal, and historical study of the Messianic seed prophecies from Genesis to the ascension

  • An in-depth study of the New Testament church as designed and planned by God in eternity

CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

  • Daily time devoted to study and information from various speakers and missionaries. Practicum for leading songs and prayers and for giving talks.
